Melanistic Savannah Kittens — Black Savannah Cats

A melanistic Savannah cat is a Savannah expressing full or near-full black coat pigmentation due to a recessive gene that causes overproduction of eumelanin (dark pigment), masking the spotted tabby pattern beneath a uniform jet-black coat. Melanistic Savannahs are sometimes called "black Savannahs" and are distinct from the standard brown spotted pattern — though in direct sunlight, the ghost spotting of the hidden tabby pattern is often visible as a "black on black" shimmer. In the wild, melanistic individuals of spotted species like jaguars ("black panthers") and leopards have been documented throughout history; melanistic Savannahs carry the same visual mystique.

Melanistic Savannah Genetics

Melanism in Savannahs is caused by a recessive mutation in the agouti signalling protein (ASIP) gene — the same gene responsible for melanism in wild felids including the jaguar and African leopard. A Savannah must inherit two copies of the recessive melanistic allele (one from each parent) to express full melanism. Both parents may appear spotted but carry one hidden melanistic allele. Our programme includes DNA testing of all breeding stock for melanistic carrier status, allowing us to predict litter outcomes and produce melanistic kittens with intentional pairings.

Appearance & Personality

Melanistic Savannahs in direct sunlight reveal their secret: a ghost pattern of dark spots shimmer against the black base coat — a stunning effect that makes them look like they are wearing velvet. Their gold or pale green eyes create a striking contrast against the black coat. In body conformation, melanistic Savannahs are identical to standard Savannahs — tall, lean, with long legs and prominent ears. Personality is equally identical to their spotted counterparts: highly interactive, bonded, and energetic.

Frequently Asked Questions — Melanistic Savannah Cats

What is a melanistic Savannah cat?

A melanistic Savannah cat is a Savannah that expresses full dark (black) colouration due to a recessive gene that suppresses the expression of the agouti pattern — the mechanism responsible for spotted markings. Both parents must carry the melanistic gene to produce melanistic offspring. The result is a uniformly black cat with the Savannah's typical tall, lean build and exotic Serval features.

Can you see spots on a melanistic Savannah?

Yes — in direct sunlight or under a camera flash, the underlying spotted tabby pattern is visible as "ghost spots" — dark-on-dark markings that shimmer against the jet-black base coat. This effect is more pronounced in some individuals than others and is one of the most captivating features of melanistic Savannahs.

Are melanistic Savannahs the same as "black panthers"?

The term "black panther" refers to any large wild felid expressing melanism — including melanistic leopards and jaguars. Melanistic Savannahs carry the same genetic mechanism (recessive ASIP mutation) as wild melanistic felids, making them a miniature domestic echo of the black panther phenomenon. They are not related to panthers as a species but share the same recessive pigmentation genetics.

How much does a melanistic Savannah cost?

Melanistic Savannah kittens typically range from $8,000 to $20,000 depending on generation (F1 melanistics command the highest premium), gender, and individual quality. Producing melanistic kittens requires both parents to carry the recessive gene, which means a significant portion of the breeding programme's investment goes into identifying and maintaining melanistic-carrier bloodlines.
